Very interesting. I've been reading Jere Gettle's book on the founding of the Baker Creek Seed Company (he's 32 years old), and I have, through it, become fascinated about the story behind seeds. He was collecting seeds when he hit puberty, and in his late teens actually went down to Mexico in his Saturn to ask farmers for specimens of what they were growing to obtain the seeds from them. Since then, he has traveled the world looking for rare seeds.

The place in the video is a real "treasure" of mankind. They mentioned that in the case of an asteroid hitting the earth how they think the seed bank would still be functional. It had me thinking that a real treasure like that would allow life to continue. while something like gold, which many people hoard for such emergencies, would do nothing to foster life. Fools...

Your comment got me thinking of Maslow's hierarchy of needs...without food, would one even appreciate gold? Even now, gold means little to me.

That was the press release version of the Doomsday Vault so we'll all have warm and fuzzy feelings toward those who made it possible.

Seeds have always amazed me. Take a sunflower seed....within just 3 months it grows into a towering plant 8 feet tall. What a marvel each seed is! Is there only one seed vault? I think there should be more than one, just in case....

Hmmmm..... just read that article, equil, and it sounds fishy. Wish there were some way we could just make our own seed vaults instead of entrusting it to someone else, especially those with vested corporate interests.

We can!!!! Every time we learn how to grow an heirloom then learn how to protect it from contamination and learn how to save seed from it.... we are creating a seed bank of sorts ESPECIALLY if we share our seed. So what if the 1% of the 1% of the 1% has no intentions of sharing with us. There's more of us than there is of them!!!

One was started fairly recently here. Not only were they collecting seeds that locals depended on for food, they collected the stories on video too. Diversity, history and entertainment, all in one place.

"One was started fairly recently here. Not only were they collecting seeds that locals depended on for food" I totally agree that's the way to go.... they've got their seed banks.... we should have ours!!! Here's some of my produce from "local" seed banks. I have no clue what the purple peppers are other than purple and I have no clue what the potatoes are other than tasty!!! The tomatillos.... haven't a clue but I just brought em in yesterday and they're gonna make some great salsa!!! The tomatillos I got from the seed from a couple down the street blew away the tomatillos I grew that were some sort of heirloom. The taste was superior and I had no problems growing them where I did with the tomatillos from the heirloom seed.... those spread all over the place and shoulda been staked and contained.
