RIP Dead Microwave

I hope this is the correct forum...

I've read a little bit how using a microwave is not very good for various reasons. But I sure liked the convenience of reheating my coffee and this is how I always cook frozen veggies and thaw meats I forget to set out.

This microwave is old and big. And now dead. It's taken off the counter now, hoping to find a place that might be able to recycle some of it. OH! Joy! I have counter space!! There's been a hand-crank Kitchen Aid mixer I've had my eye on, but no where to put it. I would still have SPACE to work with.

Can anyone give me some tips of how you adjusted from having a microwave to no longer using one?

I am thinking I am going to have to start drinking my coffee faster.

If you drink it black and use a coffee maker, you can simply pour the cooled coffee back into the still turned on coffee maker to heat it up. OR, though they're expensive, Starbucks sells metal coffee cups for travel that keep coffee hot for an extended amount of time - an amazingly extended amount of time.

Good move on dumping the microwave. It destroys enzymes and vitamins in food, and gives one the false belief that the food they are eating is still fully nutritious. Old ones have been shown to leak radiation as well...

Oh, boy... I would not be able to do without the microwave...no way! We start the day heating the water for French pressing the coffee then maybe zap frozen veggies later, Quickly zap baked goods, etc. it's mounted over the stove so it doesn't take up any countertop real estate.

Jack, still vegetarian but not so fond of cooking. So many ingredients in a meal! But we do love all the textures, colors and tastes, plus the crunchiness!

That's great!!! When will you get a juicer??? Making vegetable juices is the way to insure you are getting all of the nutrition you will ever need, and there is no cooking involved!!!

This is the baby you want. Read some of the customer comments:

I think it would be great if Wegmans would juice my veggies right there in the produce dept! I wonder if Feel-Right does... Wouldn't that be a great idea?

BirdingBunch, we don't have a microwave. I enjoy my coffee too. Reheating it on low on the stovetop works for me. Thawing foods can be a problem, I'd say it just takes a bit more planning. But it's worth it. Life is simpler this way!

Having a good warm cupa is nice to have in the morning but if you'd like a hot one later on in the day just re-hit the brew button on the coffee maker. You do not have to have anything in the water chamber for it to go through its brew-heat cycle.
Iced coffee is exceptionally good especially if you like the flavored creams!!

I tried iced coffee once. I really wanted to heat that thing up, but its cup was not microwavable. I wasn't home, so I tolerated it. I can handle drinking hot coffee year round. And yes, I like flavoured creams. I used to use coffeemate, but switched to half and half. Sometimes I throw in caramel or chocolate syrup.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did use the stove top yesterday, but can use the coffee maker as well.

I haven't freaked out yet! I don't want Papa to come home with a microwave one day because he's tired of my complaining.

Are there any good articles about issues with microwaving foods? I'd like to share something with others, but it seems there is conflicting info out there. I've already had a time when I tell people I will not use soy, corn or canola oils. It's like they think I am killing my family. It just dawned on me, this last time they came over they made sure to eat before getting here.

Sorry to break up the I-hate-microwaves party but I just want to point out that the microwave is the most energy efficient way to cook. It uses far less electricity than a stove to cook the same things. Just sayin'
