Not just sunflower seeds but pumpkin seeds too. I know we pretty much bake them and just spit out the shells and that's fine for small quantities but what if I wanted like 3 C of de-hulled sunflower seeds for a pie? What then? It's not like we have beaks like birds and can crack these things open lickety split. There's got to be an easier way to hull quantities of sunflower seeds besides using our fingers.

I searched for instructions on how to shell them, and I found instructions involving your teeth - so much for info on the internet. . .
Do you need them whole? I found this - You can run put a few in a mixer and pulse the mixer a few times until most of the shells separate, but the seeds aren't crushed too much, then put them in cold water so the shells float to the top and can be removed.

How to Shell Pumpkin & Sunflower Seeds at Home | eHow.com
Here's what ehow.com has to say for small quantities. I think some Native Americans parched the shells, but Im not sure if they were de-hulled after that. The hulls do contain a certain amount of fiber and nutrition. Also the shells preserve the freshness of the seed to a certain extent. Dehulled the seed would have to be frozen or otherwise preserved so that the oils did not become rancid. |

I've never shelled pumpkin seeds - just roast them & pop them in the mouth and crunch!

no way - Once they're roasted, they're crunchy. It's like crunching on chips.

You spit your pumpkin seeds, and I'll spit my watermelon seeds. If anyone accuses us of being un-ladylike, we'll hit 'em between the eyes with a seed!
