Just when you thought it was safe to call for your mate, look what happens! I guess it really is a frog eat toad world out there.

you'll be pleased to know the poor American toad escaped after about half an hour, and hopped away, looking annoyed but little the worse for wear. It had really puffed itself up.

I give you credit for not toying with nature.
I would have been so tempted to give him a little yank birthing.

I see some mighty fine tiarrela blossoms and butterflies linrose has set waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over in the blooming thread that are

If weather shots are permitted, I'd like to include this one. I took this after a roll cloud passed, very dramatic light underneath it.

I took this basically across the street from my house.

Beautiful savanna!
I have always pictured Illinois as being full of the hustle bustle of people and buildings...lots and lots of buildings.
Niiice, very niiiice view you have there!

Well, that's not typical of this area, actually. I'm lucky enough to live across the street from a fairly large parcel of Forest Preserve property. It was farmland until the 1960's when the Forest Preserve District of Cook County bought up thousands of acres of farms to create an intermittent green belt around the city.

They let the property go wild for the most part, although they did plant a weird mix of trees on some of it, that's what you see in the distance in that shot. The close trees are volunteers. It's pretty weedy, not much in the way of native plants other than a few of the tough ones that can slug it out with Eurasian weeds.

Just to the right of the picture is a nice, little marsh that is full of frogs and toads that I can hear loudly from my house. It's about as rural as you can get while living within a few miles of Chicago.

But we have some very nice natural preserves around here, which surprises many people. Check out the Chicago Wilderness page here.
