This one is actually from South America (Couple hours by boat South of Puerto Maldonado Peru) but I saw tracks of them in NA (Costa Rica), as well. At Cerros Dantes, a guy and his wife who run the lodge made some casts of the footprints which were very impressive!

I wondered what tapirs eat and what is the reason for their unusual snout?

The Amazing Tapir

Apparently they are herbevores not ant eaters. Does this one have a white border on his ears?

Yea it had some white on its ears. It looked a lot bigger in person. Although, it was a fairly young tapir I believe and definitely not full size. The funniest thing was watching it run. It was actually pretty fast!
