The young squirrel struggling in a net probably wasn't feeling particularly lucky. But that squirrel and five others were on their way to a new life in a leafy, acorn-rich section of Fort Lauderdale.

Each year, 400 or so homeless baby squirrels are brought to the South Florida Wildlife Center in Fort Lauderdale from Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. Blown from trees by high winds, losing their nests to tree-trimming operations or caught by cats, they are rescued and brought to the center, an affiliate of the Humane Society of the United States.
