'Earth-Scraper' Will Get Down in Mexico City -- 65 Stories Deep | AOL Real Estate

Quote:
A new building is proposed for the heart of Mexico City: a 65-story edifice, packed with retail, offices, apartments and a museum. But unlike its skyscraping peers, this giant structure won't reach for the stars: It'll plunge toward earth's core.

It is amazing that they are even thinking of such a building. Mexico City had an awful earthquake back in 1985.

1985 Mexico City earthquake - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
The event caused between three and four billion USD in damage as 412 buildings collapsed and another 3,124 were seriously damaged in the city. While the number is in dispute, the most-often cited number of deaths is an estimated 10,000 people but experts agreed that it could be up to 40,000.
I remember this partly because a friend of the Mr. had family living in Mexico City at the time. They ran several newspapers and lost all their buildings as well as their home. Luckily his family were not seriously injured.

I hadn't thought of earthquakes; let's hope the architects and engineers did. Makes one wonder what would happen to an earth-scraper.
