Default The Greatest Good - A Forest Service Centennial Film

The Greatest Good
A Forest Service Centennial Film
(DVD 3-disk set)

We just finished watching this film and really enjoyed it. It follows the history of the Forest Service and the National Forests from their beginning to the present day. It was very interesting to watch the issues and perspectives evolve. If you liked Ken Burn's PBS series on the National Parks you will like this film.

One interesting little tidbit from the era of maximum fire suppression was the story of Smokey the Bear. At his peak Smokey the Bear was the second most recognizable character in America, second only to Santa Claus. He got so much mail they gave him his own zip code.

A listing of what's in the 3 DVD set:

We've only watched the main film thus far, so I can't comment on the remaining content. There does seem to be a lot of extra info included.

This is a very interesting film. I thought the craziest thing was how Gifford Pinchot who basically developed forestry in America was ousted because of what amounts to office politics only five years after the start of the forest service.
