Default Book sources (Bookaholics: enter at own risk)

Free: Reserve the book online at your local library
  • Not there? Check WorldCat.org: The World's Largest Library Catalog to search in all libraries near you.
  • Near a public university? They may offer library cards to locals and alumni for a nominal fee.
  • Interlibrary loans are often available once you locate a source. Be aware a handling/shipping fee may apply and overdue fines may be larger.
Almost free: Online book trading groups
Paperback Book Swap -- also carries hardcovers
Title Trader
Cheap (usually): Used books
Book Sale Finder -- for the thrill of the hunt; map and listings are on lower left
AbeBooks -- consortium of independent booksellers; may find local source; shipping varies but is usually low
BetterWorldBooks.com: Buy Used Books to Fund Literacy Worldwide
books.shop.ebay.com -- ebay
Amazon.com -- check softcover/hardcover/trade for used options. Shipping usually $3.99/bk.
Barnes & Noble -- Shipping usually $3.99/bk.
Less than retail: Discount new book resellers; books often will have a black mark on edge, to indicate "remainder" status
BookCloseouts.com -- reliable; check RetailMeNot.com for current coupons
Powell's Books
AbeBooks -- consortium of independent booksellers; shipping varies
borders.com -- "Check Store Inventory" for your neighborhood store; emailed discounts; free shipping over $25
Amazon.com -- free shipping over $25

Need to make room on your bookshelves?

I have never heard of such a site as BookCrossing. What fun-
Leave it on a park bench, a coffee shop, at a hotel on vacation. Share it with a friend or tuck it onto a bookshelf at the gym -- anywhere it might find a new reader! What happens next is up to fate, and we never know where our books might travel.

Ah ha ha... I have some books I don't want to keep. I could totally see myself "planting" books to unload them. Cool idea.
