A pileated Woodpecker

I have had a pileated calling in for the last couple of years. This year t brought a juvenile. Although I took a few shots of it feeding the youngster, I didn't get one good enough to show here. Here are some shots.

I said I didn't have great shots feeding, this is about the best one.

What do you put out for them (if anything)?
And. . . how do you keep the squirrels from raiding?

We have a pair in our neighborhood woods that I see now and then, but they haven't come to our woodpecker feeder yet, though we do get Downies.

What great pictures!

Is there any way of posting a video I took?
Last week I caught one on film pounding a hole in a tree.
It's amazing how hard they strike it!

"I said I didn't have great shots feeding," Liar liar... pants on fire. ;) I've got pileated woodpeckers around me. I've yet to get anything more than a dot on a tree in a photo. What did you put out for them?

I put a suet mix in a log that I secured to the deck railings. It used to come and wait a few feet away till I pushed some food into a couple of large cracks. As soon as I left it flew to it. The cracks got larger as she chopped bits away.

All my shots were a bit out of focus in the lower lighting but the video turned out good!
