Today I saw my first turkey of the spring. I was out enjoying the scent of the air after a thunderstorm and a young turkey came out of the woods into the field. It's probably a young tom because they tend to be loners this time of year. I'm glad they are still around even with the recent activity of the new neighbors in the woods.

Our turkeys are just beginning strutting their stuff to their lady friends. I watched one quite a distance off courting with the hens.
Big ole fancy pants, tail a flair.

Blue-gray gnatcatchers are back. They love to perch on any tall grass or stick in the field to look for insects. I saw the pair hunting in the field and the terraces today. It's quite cold here, 52 degrees now, and has been raining off and on for a week now. I read they nest early and leave soon after the young ones have fledged.

At work there is this large gravel area by the walking trails where they store snowplows in the winter. Yesterday I noticed a killdeer sitting on the ground and I thought she had a nest. Then 3 chicks popped out from under her! So today I brought my camera and went out early to see if they were still there and get some photos. Super cute!!

The trails we have around campus are nice, but the entire area is chock full of invasive species. So I've been trying to educate people about that too.

Look at those long legs! So cute, hopefully they will be left alone as they are so exposed out there in the gravel lot.

I think they'll be fine, they are back in an area where there's not a lot of activity, and plenty of cover to hide in if they need to.

That is a great find gymell. I always wonder how killdeer survive since they nest on the ground
