What are "Blackles"?
A large mixed flock of Red-wingeds, Common Grackles, Cowbirds, and maybe other icterids that tend to hang with these birds. Some people call them "Blacks and Gracks", but one time I had a fumble with the mouth and it came out "Blackles". It's funny, easy to say, so this is what we now call them.

~smile~

That's pretty cool. I'd never heard of "blacks and gracks" either....but I have seen them mix and show up together in the spring at the feeder.

Thanks for the explanation.

Default Yellow bird

Anyone know what this bird is? It's almost all yellow except the wing tips.

I believe it to be one of the Tanagers, leaning toward Summer.

Thank you BB! I was struggling trying to ID this one. This must be a female as the males are bright red. She's a beauty, probably migrating or else I haven't seen her all summer but they tend to stay high in the tree canopy. I read they are bee and wasp specialists, so cool! There's a dish of water that the wasps come to drink from on the table nearby, maybe she was hunting.

You got very nice photos. We had a brief flyover of a male Scarlet once. Such beautiful birds.

Lucky for me I was sitting at the kitchen table and the camera was right in front of me when she perched on the patio chair on the deck right in my view. Those were taken through the window.

Nice pictures linrose. I didn't know if you could take pictures through glass. I need to keep my camera handy while I'm in the living room. I'm seeing lots of migrators.

Linrose, It is so nice when they cooperate like that.

A good chunk of my photos are taken through glass, even with all the bird tape on many of them. If the camera is focusing correctly, you can hardly tell.

This was an exception, with the water drops on the inside, but this by far is one of my favourites taken through the window. This is Mrs. Orchard Oriole.

I did a bad thing yesterday. I take my camera nearly everywhere, just to always be ready for that moment. While gardening, there's been some bug that catches my eye. Yesterday was the tent worms and one of the children found a grub thing that was about two inches long.

I set the camera on the ground near where I worked and got busy yanking out beans and picking tomatoes. I take in the harvest and I totally forgot about the camera, even when we had a couple of brief downpours. It worked when I turned it on, but I know there has to be water in there. I was looking at prices for new cameras earlier, just in case.
