A federal biologist found a new species in Lake Erie in September: a tiny but prolific parasite that can attach to, and feed on, a number of different sport fish, including perch.

The U.S. House has upheld a proposed national standard for cleansing ship ballast water that Environmentalists say is too weak to prevent more foreign species from invading the Great Lakes.

A maritime transportation bill being debated by the House would limit the number of live organisms in ballast water that ships carry for stability. Most aquatic invasive species in the Great Lakes arrived in ballast water from other countries.
