I'm not so sure. All the references I find for Malus sargentii show it with no foliage on the lower trunk, with a traditional tree shape rather than a shrub shape. Also, my friend has never seen any fruit or flowers and the references cite a pink showy flower in the spring with red fruit following. Again, that may be explained by his pruning but who can tell. I'm gonna ask him to refrain from pruning at least the side by the house and see what turns up.
