Signs of upcoming winter, I just saw a Downy Woodpecker today at the feeder. While they live here year round they only come to the feeder when it gets cold. Nuthatches, well we have the white-breasted year round but seeing the red-breasted is definitely a sign of impending winter. White-throated sparrow and juncos are others. The finches have disappeared into the woods and are no longer visiting the feeder. There is plenty of seed for them to feast on in the field and the prairie bed.
