Hava, for lighting purposes mainly. But if your subject is shaded the flash will allow a faster shutter speed which may be helpful too. Getting close enough to the subject for a macro can itself shade the subject. Outdoors, bugs and spiders may move, may not be in the best lighting, so the flash helps there too. And the get the background to go black. Find your flash setting and lower it for macros or you risk blowing out the pic.
