Will Physocarpus opulifolius (ninebark) grow well & bloom in shade? It seems to be a vigorous grower. I have a shade spot for it, but will think of something else if anyone here says it shouldn't be done.

I have one in shade (not super-dense, but more than 50%), and it does great. They do tend to be vigorous growers once they get established.

A really lovely shrub at maturity.
Mine also re-seeds a little bit, even though I have only one. I consider that a feature, but something to bear in mind if you don't want it to spread at all.

I've grown it in roughly 50% shade. It bloomed well but hasn't spread.

I have one in pretty dense shade (it is under the canopy of my woods, never gets direct sun, but gets dappled sunshine intermittently). I only planted it last fall, so it is too soon to tell. My friend at the botanical garden said it should do okay in that spot. I am glad to hear others have had positive experiences with it.
I am always in favor of things that spread and reseed, so long as they are native. I do, however, have mixed feelings on the subject of poison ivy and blackberry brambles which are native and wildlife friendly, and like to reseed in my woods. I would rather have ninebark!
