John has pretty much nailed this one. Some lenses are worse than others at creating the fringing (or some are better at avoiding it if you like your glass half full).

One thing that should help is Paint Shop Pro, a relatively inexpensive program that has a command to remove purple fringing. You can pick up a copy (get version X2 or later) for maybe $40.
