Default homemade dibble for standard seed tray

This is such a great tool. It is so old. I don't know where you could buy enough dibbles to make one anymore. Most of the hand dibbles are sold as a single and they are expensive. The solid plastic ones like this that were cheap aren't around any longer. The rest of the materials were readily available.

And this is the underside of the homemade dibble. This would be very expensive to make today. I have never seen any tool like this for sale that was ready made.

That would cost over $500 to make with store bought dibbles.

There's a place on line that has them. They have the dibbles too. About $360 or less, depending what dibbles you get for it. Lots of labor and hardware involved in making someting like this.

I wonder if something like this would work for the points:
Microcentrifuge Tubes - Lab Safety Supply

Not too costly, probably strong enough for potting mix and loose soil, and the collar would hold the tube in place.

Drill the holes in one piece of plywood so that the tube would go through up to the collar, and fill the holes with the tubes. secure another piece of plywood (same length and width as the first piece of plywood) over the tops of the tubes so that they are locked in place. The rest of the construction would be the same as the one in the photo.

Yep you can buy dibble boards online for any size tray. They can be pricey, or wholesale only. They can also be made if you know someone with a lathe. Cut wood dowels to length, make one end pointy, then screw/bolt them in place. Well worth it of you do alot of transplanting.

Use your finger. It's free.

They don't sell those old single dibbles in bulk any more which is a shame. You used to be able to get whole packs of them for a fair price. Now all they have are the ones with handles that are expensive.

The dibble board swamp thing found is the closest. Not a bargain at $255.

I don't know if the microcentrifuge tubes would work in a press. They aren't long enough. They could be filled with plaster of paris and used instead of a finger. In order to space properly, we could create a plastic template layed over the trays and just poke a hole one at a time.

Oh, that takes all the fun out of finding or making a really good tool
