A friend of mine, Ben Wurst, works for an organization called 'Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ. He recently wrote a blog post about how New Jersey's osprey population was greatly impacted by the derecho on June 30.

That storm sure was something we had gusts of 85 mph here and many were without power for 7-10 days. Thankfully the osprey fledglings on the reservoir I survey made it through alright. You can have all the habitat requirements just perfect but weather is still the number one cause of nestling mortality in many bird species usually it's poor weather through an entire nesting season that has a major impact but the fact this one storm claimed such a large number of nestlings has to be discouraging.

We lost of a lot of birds in that storm. I helped rescue a bunch of yellow crowned night herons not far from Atlantic City. May of the young fell from their nests in low growing pitch pine trees to the ground below. We probably rescued 10-15, but that many or more died. It was horrible to find so many dead and dyig babies on the ground.
You are very lucky your ospreys made it!
