I went through a supplemental phase years and years ago after reading all about what helps what.
I added to my diet whatever I thought I needed.....never consulting a doctor previous. Years later, in the articles that followed, said that if you eat a well balanced diet, most of the supplements are just a waste of money as the body eliminates the excess on its own one way or the other.
