Is The Food We Eat Killing Us?
excerpt from above:
Quote:
Are we digging our own graves with our teeth? Is the food that we eat every day slowly killing us? When I was growing up, I just assumed that everything in the grocery store was perfectly safe and perfectly healthy. I just assumed that the government and the big corporations were watching out for us and that they would never allow something harmful to be sold in the stores. Boy, was I wrong! Today, the average American diet is extremely unhealthy. Most of the foods that we all love to eat are absolutely packed with things that will damage our health. Many of the ingredients that make our foods "taste good" such as fat, salt and sugar can be extremely damaging in large amounts. On top of that, most processed foods are absolutely loaded with chemicals and preservatives. The next time you go to the grocery store…

MindFilter: Food Toxins and How They're Killing Us

The amount of toxins we likely ingest on a daily basis is staggering. Their harmful effects are known to the establishment, yet not only are we not adequately warned about them, we are told they are safe. There are actually laws that allow food producers to add chemicals to our food - upwards of 17,000 of them - without telling us, because these additives are toxic and, were we to know they were in our food, it would affect the corporation's bottom line. Since they are not required to tell us what these additives are, I can only speak to what is known for fact. Without even scratching the surface, these are the worst, and their effects on the human mind and body.

Fluoride

Fluoride is by far the most pervasive toxin we are exposed to on a daily basis. A 2001 report from Scientific American stated that it is literally impossible to avoid overexposure to fluoride. Two-thirds of American municipalities dump it in their water, and thus, even if you do not drink tap water, or your water is not fluoridated, you can expect to find fluoride in your soda, beer, juice, sports drinks, vitamins, cold and flu medications, and pretty much any food product that is made with or contains water. This is to say nothing of our toothpastes and mouthwash.

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)

Fat has 250 times more calories than sugar, yet even with this nutritional disadvantage, high fructose corn syrup is the number one source of calories in the United States. Fructose is much more readily metabolized to fat in the liver than glucose, and in the process can lead to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD in turn leads to hepatic insulin resistance and type II diabetes. It increases your triglyceride and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels, whereas glucose does not. It harms the way primary organs like the liver and pancreas function, leading to bone loss, anemia and heart problems, just to name a few. And it has recently been discovered that HFCS is contaminated with mercury, which is as you know a violent neurotoxin.

"Is The Food We Eat Killing Us?" Is this another trick question>>>? Just an FYI.... some aren't calling it high fructose corn syrup anymore. Folk started reading labels trying to avoid it so they gave it a new name.... they're just calling it corn syrup now. There's other names for it out there too.... confusing... it's meant to be. This way it's more difficult avoiding GMOed ingredients. Wikiepedia doesn't mention HFCS being labeled as just corn syrup but.... I heard it happened already, High-fructose corn syrup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and supposedly the FDA did give the thumbs up to the new name, A New Name for High-Fructose Corn Syrup - NYTimes.com. Sugar and HFCS may be "nutritionally" the same according to our government but... 1's from cane sugar that hasn't been GMOed and the other's from corn that has been GMOed.

The FDA recently denied a request by the corn refiners association to label HFCS as corn sugar.
Sweet victory for consumer advocates: FDA denies Corn Refiners? petition for High Fructose Corn Syrup name change - National Consumers League

With respect to the number of calories in fat and sugar(carbohydrates):
Fat: 1 gram = 9 calories
Protein: 1 gram = 4 calories
Carbohydrates: 1 gram = 4 calories
Alcohol: 1 gram = 7 calories

The article sounds like I wrote it!

Thinking about how we accepted from childhood that a proper meal consisted of ALL THE WRONG THINGS! Mostly meat with gravy, white potatoes mashed with butter and milk, and a small amount of vegetables, followed by a doughy, fatty, sugary dessert! 2nd and 3rd helpings I'd you wanted! WTH was that all about?

Then, as I grew older and raised my own kids, pizza and burger joints on every corner! Fast and fatty food everywhere! I never gave it a thought! It must be okay. Right? Convenience foods. Snack foods. Farm subsidies. Yeah, the government's "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval" on all the wrong things. Must all be good stuff. Healthy stuff. Right? Wrong!

News that diseases and conditions were actually caused by all things we were led to believe would make us healthy. So many people sickened or killed by the very things we thought of as food.

Then, learning all the back stories. Farm laborers virtually slaves. Inhumane treatment of farm animals. Toxins. So much suffering. We all paid to get sick.

Sad, that still makes my mouth water, especially the desserts!

The Skinny on Ice Cream

Commercially produced ice cream also contains a variety of food additives. If you enjoy chocolate, your favorite flavor was probably created with the help of Alkali. This is used to neutralize the natural acidity of cocoa beans, which, over time, would lead to flavor changes (it’s also used in the production of aluminum, glass and household cleaning products!).

Carrageenan is a thickening agent found in many products, including ice cream. It’s derived from red seaweed — thus technically a natural additive — but when concentrated and used in food processing it can be a dangerous carcinogen. Studies performed by The International Agency for Research on Cancer (1982) and The University of Iowa’s College of Medicine (2001) found that carrageenan causes ulcers and cancer in the gastrointestinal tracts of animals. The dangers of carrageenan have been known since 1972, when the FDA considered but ultimately chose not to ban it.

There's so much crap in our food these days I've gotten to the point I really don't want it in the house unless I grew it or raised it... a neighbor grew it or raised or.... it's organic.
