Pretty neat idea. If I'm thinking correctly the air pump is connected to the black tubing.
The one way-Check valves are DEFINITELY needed. Without them the water may end up going into your pump system. I just purchased a few for that very reason when my fish tank tubes somehow drew the water down into mine. Thank goodness I noticed a sound change and caught it in time. First time in some 40 years THAT'S ever happened! I since added them to all my tanks as a precautionary measure.
