~smile~ I see. It really was a short month and *will* soon be the 1st!

Happy Rabbit-Rabbit day! (Just checking to see if anyone else has heard of this. Last year one of the teachers I worked with used to say that the first day of every month. Anyone else hear of it or something similar?)

Also, I just wanted to remind people that the photos could've been taken in a past March...not just this March. Right? (I didn't want to give the wrong impression.)

Prenolepis imparis, Winter Ant, queen and males on nuptial. You can find swarms of these during the afternoon hours on days when it's over 70F out. Typically they're all gathered around trees, from now until the end of April. Queens are seriously out numbered like 200 to 1! I don't know why it's so dramatic in this species but that's the way it is year after year. Normally ant colonies will favor one gender over another to help prevent inbreeding.
