Deer testing offers cause for optimism in bovine TB battle
Ground and aerial sharpshooters working in the core area of a bovine tuberculosis outbreak near Skime, Minn., had killed 486 deer and a bull elk as of early this past week, and none of the animals showed any clinical signs of the disease, a Department of Natural Resources official said.

That’s good news and an encouraging development in the fight to eradicate the disease, which first was found in cattle in the summer of 2005 and in deer that fall.

But results from lab cultures that take several weeks will tell the real story.

“Nothing at this point has had any clinical signs of the disease,” said Dr. Michelle Carstenson, wildlife health program coordinator for the DNR. “I’m very happy to see that. We’ve been getting all age classes of deer, and this is right from the core, so things look good.”
