Default Flying squirrel at my bird feeders

I have a live YouTube stream of my bird feeders and noticed (for the first time ever!) a flying squirrel briefly the other day. Really surprised to see one during the day. It went straight for the peanuts like it had been there before. I made a short 20 second highlight clip.

Here's the clip: https://youtu.be/HUQc7kIhJRs (you can access the live stream from there too if you want to watch it.)

I put up a trail camera (along with some peanuts) in the bur oak which is off camera just to the left of the feeders, and sure enough, that night there it was!

What a nice surprise! Do you think it's home is in the bur oak?

There is a nice cavity in that tree, but because it's so close to the feeders, that tree is constantly busy with gray squirrels, tons of woodpeckers, nuthatches, etc. So I wouldn't think that would be a good roosting/nesting spot. However I've got several bluebird boxes, and lots of other trees around. I might try mounting a box specifically for flying squirrels and see if I get any takers.

They aren't normally out during the day, so this one might have been extra skittish/fast.

For comparison, here's a gray squirrel trying to get on the feeders.

That was a first for me also. Thanks for the opportunity! He must have been hungry to have broken his nocturnal inclination, no?

He certainly was quick. If that were normal behavior, he'd need massive amounts of calories to maintain!

Last fall I bumped a snag and out came this little fella from a worn hole in it's uppermost.

This little youngster looked at me for the longest time thinking he was well concealed laying against the trunk so still.
It was I that made the move to leave.
