Vale has faced heavy criticism for high levels of pollution at this plant, which increased Rio de Janeiro’s carbon dioxide emissions by 76 %. Nevertheless, Vale’s project looks set to profit from ‘carbon credits’ under the so-called Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and other offsetting mechanisms.

“The project severely affected the livelihoods of eight thousand fishing workers living in traditional communities in the Sepetiba bay and the joint venture was denounced for environmental crimes in Brazilian courts...

That statement from their CEO is a lot different than statements made back before they had the green go ahead light for their project. It should come as no surprise to us that Vale evidently wasn’t all that interested in saving the people of the Amazon from any perceived atrocities of AGW. “Helping” bring energy to the Amazon… and conveniently to themselves too… positions them well to cash in on carbon credits while securing energy for future projects in the Amazon and then there’s the unlimited futures for them and their stakeholders all for “helping” elevate the locals out of poverty and starvation by providing them with energy and a coupla hundred jobs to pay for the energy they'll be generating. Vale has a long term business plan that we could bank on including zip nadda no funds for clean up of the very real environmental contaminants or the ecological destruction that’ll be left in the wake of their project…. to the children of the people of the Amazon and their children’s children and their children’s children’s children. God help anyone who interferes with Vale cashing in on their investment. Vale and all its stakeholders will make money....lots of money on the backs of those human beings who will slide into an even greater economic abyss than that which they were already in upon completion of the project. That’s when Vale will have them in a chokehold. Vale will be tied into the grid by then and in a position to up the costs of both energy and water right through the Brazilian ceiling and they will. We’ve seen this play out time and time again anytime BigGreen gets their fingers in humanity’s cookie jar.
