pig Influenza found in Canadian pigs: human source suspected

Influenza found in Canadian pigs: human source suspected

excerpts from above:
Quote:
The new H1N1 influenza virus has been found in pigs in Alberta, Canada. This marks the first time this virus has been found in pigs, or any other non-human species. It's not surprising ...

Quote:
In this case, the source of the pig infections is presumed to be a person - a farmhand that contracted the infection in Mexico. He became ill upon returning to Canada, and the pigs started showing flu-like signs about ten days after he returned to work. Various swine industry and health organizations sent out reminders to pig producers that sick people and/or people returning from Mexico should avoid contact with pigs, however the farmhand in question here returned from Mexico before much of this information became available.

Federal officials say there's no danger in eating pork products
Monday, October 19, 2009

excerpts from above:
Quote:
MONDAY, Oct. 19 (HealthDay News) -- A pig that was shown at the Minnesota State Fair two months ago has tested positive for the H1N1 virus...
Quote:
The chances of a pig infecting a person with swine flu is considered remote. But, the animals can act as "mixing vessels" if they catch two different strains of the disease at the same time, potentially giving rise to a mutated version of the flu. Officials said there's no evidence that that has happened, the AP said.
Quote:
"We have fully engaged our trading partners to remind them ... that there is no scientific basis to restrict trade in pork and pork products," Vilsack said. "People cannot get this flu from eating pork or pork products. Pork is safe to eat."
Quote:
On Friday, U.S. health officials reported that 11 more children had died from H1N1 swine flu....

Food Safety Not at Risk

Food safety is not at risk. No birds or eggs from this facility have entered the food chain. Proper cooking practices destroy the influenza virus.
Quote:
Local public health units are contacting individuals who may have had contact with the flock...

The producer has voluntarily quarantined the infected birds and put movement controls in place...

Default Swine flu has gone to the birds

Swine flu has gone to the birds

excerpt from above:
Quote:
This is not a reason to panic. No one can get the flu from eating a properly-cooked Thanksgiving turkey (nor from any other type of properly-cooked turkey). The producer has voluntarily (and very responsibly) quarantined the affected flock, and no birds or eggs have left the facility. There is no risk to the food chain.
Quote:
Pigs can be infected by human, pig and bird flu viruses, and multiple infections can result in viruses trading genes and producing new viruses that can infect more species. So it's not too surprising that H1N1can infect people, pigs and now birds as well. This incident serves as an important reminder that we need to remain diligent about infection control and hygiene, even around animals....

A bigger concern might be someone infecting their indoor/outdoor cat, who would then infect a stray cat, which would then infect another indoor/outdoor cat, which could infect a family member. That's still a VERY unlikely situation - really it's nothing to worry about...

In the department of things that make you go hmmmmmm... It's "still a VERY unlikely situtation" an infected stray cat would infect an indoor/outdoor cat that would infect a human family member... that would be let back out to infect a ?... which would then infect a ?.... and forget about those animals we call wildlife out there... see... nothing to worry about here... "still a VERY unlikely situtation".

Lisa, a travel agent, saw spooked travelers cancel cruises and flights to Mexico during the spring swine flu scare. That seemed like overreaction. Her only worry was potential loss of income.

This new swine flu virus didn't sound like a threat to healthy families like hers with access to medical care.

By summertime, ships were sailing south again. Talk of swine flu had gone the way of SARS...
