WASHINGTON - A Senate hearing on the ecological and economic dangers of invasive species and diseases turned into a sort of show-and-tell Wednesday - with a 16-foot-long snakeskin, a jar containing a Chinese mitten crab and poster-sized photos of fungus-afflicted bats.

"Invasive species are among the primary factors that have led to the decline of native fish and wildlife populations in the United States," said Gary Frazer, assistant director for fisheries and habitat conservation for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. "Non-native infectious diseases are of particular concern because native wildlife populations are less likely to have developed immunity to these pathogens."

Federal officials have estimated the U.S. spends more than $138 billion annually controlling invasive species.
