fish Cheonggyecheon, a daylighted urban stream in Seoul

Ready for a little good news? Here's an article on an urban stream that was released from under-street storm sewers in Seoul:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/17/world/asia/17daylight.html

From the article:
"Today, after a $384 million recovery project, the stream, called Cheonggyecheon, is liberated from its dank sheath and burbles between reedy banks. Picnickers cool their bare feet in its filtered water, and carp swim in its tranquil pools."
"Cities from Singapore to San Antonio have been resuscitating rivers and turning storm drains into streams."

Sure, it's not fully restored in an ecological sense-- but it helps to connect urbanites with nature, as well as potentially benefiting some wildlife.

It's amazing that they were able to recover such a putrid river making it pure enough to wade in.
BRAVO!

The sewer system is an engineering marvel. I wonder how well the sewer system is functioning? I found a photo of the huts built by the Korean War refugees, Removing Freeways - Restoring Cities I also found a more recent photo of a portion of the project with vegetation, South Korea Trades Dirty Expressway for Amazing 6km Greenway : EcoWorldly

Wonderful!

Providence, RI, recently dug up an old canal and turned it into Waterplace Park. It's done wonders for the city.
