excerpts from above:
Quote:
The Japanese mosquito is buzzing around town in increasing numbers, and the pest is a problem on several fronts. It will bite during the day. Its eggs can survive a Chicago winter. And it can carry disease.

Now that warm weather is finally here, mosquitoes can't be far behind. And as the bug warriors of south cook county begin making their rounds, they're watching carefully for a species that's new to our area: the Japanese Rock Pool Mosquito.

Who can we thank for the introduction of the Japanese Rock Pool Mosquito? The aquatic plant industry that supplies water gardeners with imported plants for water features?

Default Ochlerotatus japonicus

I looked it up online. The species is indigenous to Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and South China. They don't know how it got here but they suspect it came over in freight quite possibly waste tires. Used tires frequently sit outside. Rain collects in them and creates a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. I don't understand why they would be shipping their used tires over here. We don't know what to do with the ones we have.
