USDA Blog Great Lakes Greenhouse Gives Native Plants a Second Chance
excerpt from above:
Biologists have long recognized the important role native plants play in maintaining a healthy forest. When native plants are crowded out by invasive plants, those native species can suffer to the point of extinction.

Since the early 1990s, the Hiawatha National Forest has operated a greenhouse in Marquette, Mich. The idea is to provide both native seeds and seedlings for successful restoration of sites impacted by logging or disturbed by other land management activities. For instance, when aging culverts are replaced, native plants can be introduced to re-vegetate disturbed soil. Seeds and seedlings are also used to enhance existing wildlife habitats.

During the summer months, between 35,000 and 90,000 native seedlings raised in the Marquette greenhouse are used in the national forest’s plant restoration projects...

And tax payers are funding ALL of this because why>>>> ??? I can see our $$$ being used any time our infrastructure is updated and a revegetation of "improved" land where something like culverts were replaced is called for but.... using our $$$ any time "land management activities" impact a site as in when loggers are permitted to go into our National Forests to harvest for profit>>>? Loggers should be contractually required to foot 100% of the restoration bills!!! Our lumber is getting sold overseas.... just like our coal is getting sold overseas to "developing" countries.... why should we add insult to injury footing the clean up bills on our land that they're pock marking all so BigCorps can enjoy even higher profits>>>? Totally ridiculous.... all these BigCorps that are extracting our natural resources should be held 100% responsible for restoring the lands their raping.
