Well, last Spring I planted a few more Beautyberry seeds, and two of them germinated. I transplanted each of them into a flowerpot. They didn't do really well, we had a hot, dry Summer, but they continued to stay alive. I left them outdoors all winter in a sheltered spot, still in the pots. Both of them now appear to be putting out little leaf-buds, so they've survived the winter. Hopefully, they'll continue to grow. Oddly enough, I also grew some little rose-of-sharons (Althea syriaca) from seed last year, and they grew quite well during the summer, better than the beautyberry. I transplanted 2 of them into pots, and kept them in the same sheltered spot in my backyard over the winter, along with the beautyberries. But so far, as of now, they still haven't put out any growth. I still haven't given up on them, as I know that rose-of-sharon often are late in leafing out in the Spring. I just find it a little strange, I'd considered rose-of-sharon to be hardier than beatyberry, but perhaps I'm wrong.
