Default Rush Oak Openings

Rush Oak Openings (also known as Quinn Oak Openings) is an oak savanna near Rochester, NY. It is the only oak savanna in NY open to the public and one of only four in existence. Globally as well, the oak savanna is a threatened plant community.

I had never before visited a savanna or prairie community, and I just found myself fascinated with the grasses and landscapes. Most of the soil was extremely rocky and dry, but there were also some spots wet enough to support boneset, blue cardinalflower, bee balm, and even Phragmites. Supposedly, the rare globeflower (Trollius laxus) grows here, but I didn't see it. Not too much was in bloom in the drier sections apart from the grasses and a few goldenrods (and the ubiquitous Queen Anne's lace).

My pictures from the visit were mostly landscapes and a few birds. Here is a selection of landscape photos (look at all that little bluestem and Indiangrass in some of these!):

Two more landscape shots:

Most of my bird photos are in this thread, but I managed to get a couple decent shots of turkey vultures, although both are backlit:

I didn't have a macro lens with me, but here's the best I could do for plant closeups:

I don't often see black swallowwort, but it was clearly invasive here:
