paws Natchez Trace Parkway

The Natchez Trace Parkway closely follows an ancient salt-lick-to-grazing-pasture migratory route of the American Bison.
Native Americans, following the "traces" further improved this "walking trail" for commerce between villages.
By traversing the tops of the hills, humans avoided the endless climbing and descending or being caught in a valley if attacked by predators.

Plans for a modern roadway began in the 1930s as one of the many projects of the Civilian Conservation Corps to give tribute to the original Natchez Trace. Construction began in 1939....Daughters of the American Revolution began planting markers and monuments. After many years (owing to a lack of funds) the 444-mile stretch running from Natchez, Mississippi to Nashville, Tennessee was complete. It opened May 21, 2005

That is strange. I traveled it's entirety on September of 2004 and before. I think the first time I drove a portion of it was in '67. It was a lot different back then. When I drive from Texas to NE, It is how I go. . I hate freeways.

Gaps and Completion
Quote:
Two gaps remained, one being a several mile long bypass of Jackson, Mississippi. These final two segments, between Interstate 55 and Interstate 20 (in Ridgeland and Clinton, Mississippi, respectively) and between Liberty Road in the city of Natchez, Mississippi and U.S. Highway 61 near Washington, Mississippi, were finally completed and opened on May 21, 2005.

And of course there are archeological sites all up and down the trace. I spent many years there surveying and excavating sites endangered by construction of the roadway.

There are a few hundred sites in that area. Don't remember anything specific, but the deposits range from paleolithic (15,000 y.a.) to Mississippian (1000 A.D.) The one's I worked on were mostly in NE Mississippi. I do remember recovering bison bones.

Hurricane Creek was dry when we visited but.... the trail was still beautiful. The shroom was from the trail we hiked. The swamp was visible from our car windows. We had to stop!!! Where else but on the Natchez Parkway can you be driving along and out of the blue spot something like that!!!

Tishomingo is accessible from the Natchez Trace…. that park deserves its own thread, Tishomingo State Park, Mississippi.

Whoops..... This should have been added before Equill jumped in..

The Natchez trail STARTS in Natchez Mississippi.
Highlights of the area we hadn't the opportunity to cover. http://www.nps.gov/natr/planyourvisi...to-jackson.htm

If you ever intend upon traversing the trail.
Print out a copy of each of the maps I'll be inserting along the way. http://www.natcheztracetravel.com/ma...ztojackson.pdf
They'll come in real handy in locating the items you wish to see.

Notice the red mile markers on the map.
The road itself ALSO has these posted making it "real" easy to locate the items we had circled previous to our adventure.

OUR journey jumps in at mile marker #105 at Jackson Mississippi
