Default ~Chimney Bluffs~

Chimney Bluffs is a natural place, along the southern shore of Lake Ontario, near Sodus Bay, New York.

Quote:
The towering mud cliffs of the Chimney Bluffs, which drape down to a vibrant pebble beach, is easily the most beautiful vista over Lake Ontario. Less than an hour east of Rochester, the glacial landscape of the Bluffs is a draw for tourists all over Western New York. Nearly four miles of hiking trails traverse the park, with the most popular, the Bluff Trail, bringing hikers literally to the brink of thrilling cliffs made from glacial deposits and sculpted by harsh weather. The Chimney Bluffs never fail to give visitors breathtaking views of the Great Lake and a sense of wonder about this region's natural history.

Even though it was mid-day, I still tried for interesting shots, then when I got home, played with this one in an app, 100 cameras in 1.

Default Surprisingly thin layer of soil above the hard gravely stuff below

Please feel welcome to add information about the geology or natural history of such a place!

From the looks of the formations.... just a guess but I'm thinking those were formed when the glaciers moved through over 10k years ago. I'm surprised they didn't have any signs posted for visitors sharing the history.

adding.... http://www.wgrz.com/news/article/168...y-Natures-Hand, "Chimney Bluffs State Park is one of New York's most unique landscapes, and it's very nature keeps it in a state of constant change. The towering bluffs were carved by erosion both past and present. The hills, known as "drumlins" were initially formed by receding glaciers over 12,000 years ago, and continue to be sculpted under Mother Nature's hand.
Joe Keeler is the park's manager. "When the wind and the waves and rain and snow all wear on the face of these drumlin hills, then this is what you get, is these type of structures, these pinnacles and spires."

Yes, besides being strange, they are great subjects for photography and the shots are fun to play with! It's a good day-trip from home.

You'd love Arches National Park in Utah!!! If you and the Big R ever get out west.... you haaaaaave to go there. I think for you it'd be better going in spring or fall though. I wouldn't go back in summer again.

Did you pull that last one free? It almost looks like a worked piece. Could it be a primitive ax head?
