Smilax is a great vine to plant to keep the neighbor's dogs out or yours in. Those thorns will rip the skin right off of you! We've got it by the tons down here in VA. It's got its place, but that place is away from the house.

Are there not some Smilax ssp. that do not have thorns? Anyone know what those species are?

Some 40 years ago, another young (then!) man and I tried bushwhacking our way through a swampy area near the MD-VA state line infested with Smilax - wearing very heavy clothes (which suffered severe damage) and wielding machetes; we averaged less than one mile per hour...
