It’s Easter weekend, so bunnies are in the news. This prompted me to check in on an issue I touched on in 2009, during a visit to the University of Victoria on Canada’s Vancouver Island.

It turned out the campus was overrun with rabbits (above). The bunnies, largely the offspring of discarded pets, were unbelievably cute one on one, but were creating tripping hazards and landscaping issues with their burrows and potentially offering an enticement to the rising population of cougars in the region.

A fight had ensued between animal welfare campaigners and a mix of environmental studies students, school administrators and community groups over next steps, which ranged from a semi-tongue-in-cheek recipe for Rabbit Restoration Stew to moving all of the animals to a sanctuary. Here’s the outcome…

"They were adorable, but... " belonged in a stew pot or a soup kettle. It's ok to say it. You showed your true colors when you mentioned you'd bought a hotdog for a homeless guy!!!!

Spaying and neutering rabbits at about $125 a pop was a ridiculous waste of resources not to mention what it's gonna cost maintaining that sanctuary.
