Default Palo Verde Beetle

Last night my kids found a Palo Verde Beetle outside. These are usually only seen in July. It's in a quart size Mason jar! It was moving around so much and so fast, it was impossible to get a good picture. My son took a short video of it so maybe I'll put it up on Youtube.

Having a hard time finding info on the life cycle. The larva lives underground feeding on plant roots for 3 years. The adult is quite large, up to 6 inches but this one was probably closer to 3 inches, just shy of not being able to lay flat in the bottom of a quart size mason jar. They move fast and can fly, and obviously they will mate at the adult stage but other than that, I don't know if they feed or not, or how they use those powerful mandibles.

</div> It took youtube forever to do the sound swap. My son did his best, it was night time and just in the kitchen, lighting not that great etc. etc. but you can see how this female was desperate to get out. You might see on her spiny collar a little yellow. That's a bit of a palo verde blossom stuck to her.
