I'm really enjoying my time out looking for the little creatures to photograph.

Once in a while you find them looking unexpectedly back at you as well.

This is a flower/hover fly (Diptera: Syrphidae). This is a very large family with many species that superficially resemble one another; see http://tinyurl.com/yjdwu3e for one tat resembles yours. Many of these flies are excellent bee and wasp mimics, and the larvae of several species are predaceous on aphids and other small, soft-bodied arthropods.

I don't know what you're talking about most of the time, suunto, but you say the coolest things!

I love it when he talks fly... or beetle... or anything else bug. He has such a way with words sometimes I crack up laughing.

Thanks for the ID and info, suunto. I tried to add it to the post and pic but apparently can't edit it now.

I think we get 24 hours to edit.

These creatures were on the flat-topped white asters (Doellingeria umbellata) today. The caterpillars are vastly more colorful than the adult moths!

That is quite a contrast, swamp thing, between the caterpillar and the moth. Beautiful caterpillar, and really good photos.
