Default Bat-Plant Communication Faclitates Pollination

A Vine Bounces Back Sound to Signal Bats - http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/02/sc...ml?ref=science

“Flowers attract bees and birds with their colors and scents. Now, a new study reports that a rain forest vine in Cuba attracts nectar-feeding bats with sound. The vine, Marcgravia evenia, has dish-shaped leaves that bounce back echoes that are easy for the bats to identify through echolocation.
“For the plants, it increases the success of pollination,” Dr. Simon said. “For the bats, it’s good because it helps them find the flowers faster — they have to make several hundred visits to flowers every night.”
The study, which appears in the current issue of the journal Science, is one of the first to focus on the evolution of echo-acoustic signals in plants.”

Several hundred species of plants in the Neotropics rely on nectar-feeding bats for pollination, and researchers expect to find other plant species that are similarly adept at communicating with their bat pollinators.
“Every artist dips his brush in his own soul and paints his own nature into his pictures.”

Amazing. Makes one wonder all the wonders out there yet to be discovered.
"If suburbia were landscaped with meadows, prairies, thickets or forests, or combinations of these, then the water would sparkle, fish would be good to eat again, birds would sing and human spirits would soar." ~ Lorrie Otto
