Hey I tried talking you into doing a nest contest .....
I hadn't known you were already working on doing the desktop photos sooooooo
I went on ahead and started a thread where I could share them.

Besides, THAT photo you just sent would have placed!

I came across a few nests while I was down in Georgia and Alabama last month.

This first shot is an armadillo nest.

I'm not sure what bird is using this for a home.

Wonderful additions! I have never seen an armadillo nest.
We have the great blue herons too but I haven't ran into any nests yet.
I'll continue searching.............

I'll tell you where I see the nests down here. Islands. I'm not talking about big islands but rather the smaller little ones that dot waterways. Behind our house on the reservoir the only places I see that these birds build their nests are on the little islands around the edges. They won't build on our side of the tidal creek for anything...much too close to us humans I guess. Good luck in your search.

I bet they are up in the little inlets that lead into the river...... unfortunately I can only get to them by boat which I don't have. I see them along the opposite side quite often.

mouse Late winter in the prairie

Secretive activities of prairie denizens revealed under the melting snow. In the second photo I have worked open the top of the nest.

A denizen is any resident.

The pic of the underside of the squirrel's nest is absolutely wonderful as is the pic exposing the tunnels once hidden beneath snow.
