Default Regarding Self Promotion

Note: This self promotion policy has been revised:
New Self Promotion Policy - July 16, 2010

The policy below is no longer applicable; this thread will remain here for a short time for historical purposes only.

Regarding Self Promotion. Wildlife Gardeners would like all members to step out of their marketing shoes and into their work boots or gardening clogs when starting a thread or posting in threads. In our Fine Print we stated posting anything on topic and consistent with the focus of the board in which one was posting was acceptable. Wildlife Gardeners has no google or yahoo syndicated ads and we have no third party ads anywhere therefore it would be inappropriate to self promote one’s own publication, product, service, website, or blog.

Simply stated, self-promotion of one’s publication, product, service, website, or blog in threads will not be permitted in any of the main forums at WG. Although we do not allow the promotion of "green products and services" in our main forums, we have provided this area of our site to approved registered members:
http://www.wildlifegardeners.org/forum/green-products-service-providers/

Are you an author? Ecological service provider? Are you a member of a “green” .org? Do you have a “green” product you would like to advertise? Are you a nursery or garden center offering nearly 100% North American native plants with no invasives tossed in to make a quick buck? Are you a wildlife or natural areas artist? Do you create works of art focusing on native species? Are you a wildlife rehabber? If you are a registered member of WG and were able to answer yes to any of the above questions, please contact an Admin for how you may be able to shamelessly promote your product, service, website, or blog. 'Green Blogs and Websites' participation is by invitation only.

When you contact us, please provide a link to your site.

With the exception of .orgs, the strings attached to the above offer will be that those who are given a free slot be "green" and that they try their best to share their gifts and talents when possible by posting in the forums a little bit each week and particularly if they see someone who could use a helping hand. It's a great thing when knowledge and experience can be shared. A linkback to Wildlife Gardeners from approved sites is appreciated.

For .orgs we ask that any threads started in our ‘Green Products and Service Providers’ area be monitored.

By “green” we mean publications, products, services, websites, or blogs that are consistent with our Mission Statement which may be viewed at our home page:
http://www.wildlifegardeners.org/forum/
We determine if a publication, product, service, website, or blog is consistent with our Mission Statement and our decision is final.

Hopefully; this will keep our main forums free of offers to get a criminal justice degree in just two years, free of cheerios flying across our monitors, free of offers to buy fake rolexes, and free of blogs pedaling invasives or potentially invasive species while providing an appropriate area to enable our own members the opportunity to shamelessly self-promote themselves for no charge without undo competition.

Hey FW, thanks for "laying" this out once again. I appreciate the efforts of the staff to try and keep the site for and about gardening. These ads are really annoying. You are doing a great job, thanks

They are most active late night and into the early hours of the morning. We do a sweep and delete offensive posts and threads we find before our members begin to log on. Threads and posts of legitimate members are left standing.

I would like to take this opportunity to point out that every member has the ability to report a post. Underneath the posting member's username you will find a white icon with a red outline in the shape of a triangle. This is the "report post" icon. If the post contains offensive content, let us know. As a rule of thumb, we look to the community to report offensive content.

A number of changes have been made to the system to reduce the likelihood of undesirables registering. These changes aren't full proof.

If you believe that you have been blocked from registering or banned in error, please email: staff AT wildlifegardeners.org. Include your IP address or user name and I will review your case and re-instate your account if you appear to have been blocked or banned in error.

Thanks for the reminder, FW

Wildlife Gardeners has begun its first annual review of website operations. We are evaluating several changes to our website. One of the areas under consideration is our Green Blogs and Websites area. With the exception of one site currently under review, we will not be adding any more listings to this area until we have completed our review process. We anticipate that our annual review will be substantially completed in June 2010. We expect to announce and implement the results of our review shortly thereafter.

A portion of the annual review has been completed. It has been determined that participation in the "Green Blogs and Websites" forum is now by invitation only. This is one of several changes that are being made in order to reduce the administrative load on our small staff.
