Default A few wildflowers

On today's short walk at Bartel Grassland, south of Chicago, I saw a few things starting to bloom. I was especially happy to see the Meadow Anemone, one of my favorites. We introduced them two years ago and they're spreading like crazy. There was only one fully open, but there must have been another 150-200 more plants around it.

The plants are Meadow Anemone, Balsam Ragwort and Golden Alexanders.

Very Nice, I see a bee found the Golden Alexander, With it's flat flowers it must be a favorite with nectaring butterflies. Thanks jpdenk all 3 are going on my prairie list.

With all the rain we have been having that must have been a wet walk. Did you wear your wellies...? LOL.
Nice pictures. Everything has greened up quickly this year and I expect the prairies to be an awesome sight all year. Even if the summer gets hot and dry I think we have had enough rain to make up for the lack of snow cover this winter. Keep walking and watching those precious places.

I'm seriously thinking of trying the meadow anemone.

I did get wet feet, but I honestly didn't care, as it was a totally beautiful day.

I seem to recall that we planted plugs of Meadow Anemone three or four years ago, may have planted some seed in the initial big seedings 9 or 10 years ago too, but I'm not sure. I saw the first scattered blooms in 2010, a few more last year, but this is the first year that we've seen fairly big colonies of them. I'm anticipating quite a display of them in the next few days. Hopefully, I'll get back there to photograph them when the colony is in full bloom.

I planted one last year on Amelanchier's reassuring me that it could, indeed, be controlled. So far it has behaved well. I love the contrasting colors of white, yellow and dark green. I actually wouldn't mind seeing it get a bit aggressive; God knows I have enough aggressive aliens it could do battle with...
