Thanks for the suggestions, girls. I looked up the tobacco budworm/heliothis virescens and according to Wikipedia (not always reliable), they aren't in NC. Given how much tobacco we grow, I'm not sure I believe that! The Misogada is too shiny, I think, and hairless.
I didn't know caterpillars could change color with what they were eating. I'm going to find some much lighter color zinnias and see if pinkster changes to a lighter shade. In any case, I am keeping him for a bit to see what he turns into (or she, I don't want to be sexist here.) Swamp thing, that is an amazing photo of the red admiral on the birch. Really beautiful.

Beautiful caterpillars! Io moth caterpillars also change colors as they get larger. What kind of cats are these??
