...but sometimes it's the only way to learn. I'd like to know just what is going on here.
![]() I'm pretty sure that these are butterfly/moth eggs. ![]() Here, they appear to be in the process of creating... ![]() ...this. But that doesnt seem right as they are only eggs at this point. Have the caterpillars hatched and they're responsible for buttoning things up like this? Are the two phenomenon (on the same tree) unrelated? Finally, how many things have I already misstated in this post? I await (limited) enlightenment

I can tell you for a fact that these are not monarch butterfly eggs. I believe the small white eggs are a separate species from whatever rolled the leaf. As a general rule, monarch butterfly eggs are found singly, on one leaf.

I'm more inclined to think that's a gall or something similar. . .

Ah, I'd forgotten about galls. I think I saw the rolled leaf and immediately started thinking butterflies and so assumed I was looking at eggs. Thanks to all for the information.

Yup, but if you tie a sewing string real tight around the base of them they fall right off in a few days....
Pregnancy can bring them out too!
