Default Blue clue !

I am wondering if I have captured a photo of the blue butterfly mentioned on the endangered species list.

Are you thinking of a Karner Blue?

I have no idea. I have never seen one before. If I've seen one before I didn't know it. I've planted some hosts for them and I look and hope but so far no go. I thought they were bluer.

I think your butterfly is a Spring Azure. It's not threatened or endangered.

The two Blues that are endangered/threatened are the Northern Blue and the Karner Blue. Both of these have very specific host plant requirements and quite limited distributions.

Oh I see on your map you sent- Mid Wisconsin! Some have orange on their wing edges and some don't. How can this be? They look entirely different.

Mine looks like the one without the orange. Could I possibly have caught the rare one in a photo?

It's very unlikely that you would see one in your area. The distribution records used for the maps go all the way back to when recording began. The distribution of the Karner Blue is shrinking rather than expanding.

If you take a very close look at the pattern, shape and number of dots on the undersides of the wings, you can see some differences between the two species. Notice, for example, that the very outer edge of the wing is different; the Spring Azure has dots, the Karner Blue does not.

Sorry.

You are correct. I can see the difference now that you have pointed them out. It was a good chase anyway. I'll just go flutter about elsewhere now.Thank you.......
