What a lot of butterflies this summer. I have been seeing at least one Monarch daily this month and the red admirals , like every summer here, have been abundant. The surprisingly bountiful butterfly has been Swallowtails. I see them everywhere. From the alleyways of Chicago to the hilly wet woods of Mo, many species have been present.
My favorite encounter has to be the comma butterfly. Landing on every sweaty passerby we managed to get several video recorded.
Are you seeing more butterflies and moths this year?

I'm pretty sure this is a fifth instar eastern tiger swallowtail caterpillar.

And a picture of one of the fearless mineral seeking commas.

It's a tiger. When they are dark like that, they are looking a spot to pupate. Ideal time to bring them inside and give them a safe spot since no feeding is necessary.

The eastern tiger swallowtails are out in full force now, both the black and the yellow. They are enjoying the mountain mint which is prolific this year thank goodness. We've had years with very few. Just today I saw several eastern tigers, fritillaries, and spicebush swallowtails on them.

I also came across the remains of a luna moth along the path today.

We have a lot of butterflies, including more monarchs than usual.

Saw a red admiral today in the garden, no camera but he was too busy to sit still anyway. Guess I'll have to start a 2018 version of this thread.
