I searched around on BAMONA and google trying to figure this guy out but no luck. He was chowing down on my viburnums. The only thing wildflower.org says eats viburnums is a spring azure, but there's no way this big guy can be that, plus I know tons more species eat viburnums.
Found today in NW Vermont. Thanks for the help! |

Ah cool! Never seen them as a late instar like that, with the prevalent red coloring.

That is a gorgeous photo disuhan.
It also shows so clearly the how the red coloring of caterpillar mimics the coloring of the shrub. |

I was going to say the same thing. Cool photo. Wild looking caterpillar.
Interesting point.

Thanks everyone! I guess I'll submit the photo to the contest.
![]() Linrose, I was afraid it might be a hornworm, but it sure does look like a hummingbird clearwing. Except I can't find any photos online with the pinkish hues this one has. It's funny, BAMONA says it eats V. opulus, except it's annihilated my V. lentago, now starting on my V. dentatum, but hasn't touched my V. opulus var. americanum. |
