Default Hickory Tussock Moth (Lophocampa caryae)

We found two of them floating on leaves on the Deerfield River while tubing a few weeks ago. By two I mean two different caterpillars on two different leaves a half mile apart. Also, they were both found by the same person, who will henceforth be known as 'The Caterpillar Whisperer'.

Luckily we didn't touch this little one as they can cause itchy rashes in some people.

It's a beauty, that's for sure.

ooooh, The Caterpillar Whisperer. I'm sure he/she will cherish that little pet name.

Are there any tips or secrets on knowing which ones are the ones that burn or itch? When Equilibrium was here, she posed for a photo opportunity with a caterpillar that caused her much grief after that close encounter.

I never thought about cute furry cats being itchy before W.G. but even so I'd still give them a little soft pet. Sure are pretty!
